Water cascades into the dark void where the North Tower of the World Trade Center once stood, Michael Arad's "Reflecting Absence" memorial photographed at night. The bronze parapet around the edge carries the names of the 2,977 people killed on September 11, 2001, and the six killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Each of the twin pools measures roughly an acre — the precise footprint of the tower that stood there — and the water falls thirty feet into the void before disappearing into a smaller square at the center. The night exposure deepens the void and turns the falling water into something closer to memory than spectacle. Reflecting Absence working the way Arad intended, after dark.
