The North Tower memorial pool sits beneath the still-rising Freedom Tower, the rebuilt One World Trade Center captured during the years of construction. The image documents a moment that won't come again — the memorial pools, dedicated on the tenth anniversary in September 2011, opened years before the 1,776-foot tower behind them topped out in 2013 and welcomed its first tenants in 2014. Visitors stand at the bronze parapet of names while the skyscraper grows in the background. The composition places memory in the foreground and rebuilding behind it, in the order they actually happened. Lower Manhattan rebuilding around its own grief — caught mid-construction.
