The white neoclassical dome of the United States Capitol rises against a clear sky, the Statue of Freedom standing at its peak nineteen feet tall in bronze. The building has been the meeting place of Congress since 1800, but the present dome dates to 1866 — Thomas U. Walter's cast-iron replacement for the original sandstone version, raised in nine million pounds of iron during the Civil War on Abraham Lincoln's express order that the work continue as a symbol the Union would hold. The composition centers the dome on its axis, letting the building's symmetry do the talking. The photograph captures the most familiar silhouette in American politics — and the iron beneath the paint.
