Camel, Sphinx and Pyramid - Giza Egypt Travel Photography

A camel stands in proud profile across the foreground while the Great Sphinx and the Pyramid of Khafre hold the background beneath a flawless blue sky. The composition layers three planes of Egypt into one frame — the animal, the carved lion, the built mountain. The camel is the most recent arrival of the three: the dromedary was domesticated and brought to Egypt only in the first millennium BCE, long after the pyramids were raised around 2500 BCE, though it has since become every bit as much a symbol of the place. Sharp detail on the camel's harness and textured face gives way to the haze of the plateau, drawing the eye back through distance and time.
