The Statue of Liberty stands sentinel in New York Harbor while the Manhattan skyline glows behind her in deep blue-hour light. Photographed from a helicopter at altitude over the harbor, this is the icon as few ever see her — from the sky, at the moment day becomes night. The statue, a gift from France inaugurated in 1886, was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel; at 305 feet from base to torch she remained the tallest structure in New York Harbor for nearly half a century. The composition holds her in profile against the brighter glow of the city, a small figure carrying the whole frame.
