Sagrada Familia Knight and Horse Relief - Barcelona Architecture Photography

A medieval knight on horseback is carved into the limestone of the Sagrada Familia, one of hundreds of figures still being added to the basilica's facades more than a century into construction. Antoni Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and worked on it for the rest of his life, but the building has continued under successive teams of sculptors and architects — the most figurative reliefs cluster on the Nativity facade, the more austere geometric work on the Passion side. The frame isolates the relief from the surrounding stonework, letting the shadowed cuts of mane and chain mail do the modeling. The photograph captures a building that is still, on any given day, being made.
