Boathouse Row Night Reflection - Philadelphia Schuylkill Photography

The illuminated outlines of Philadelphia's Boathouse Row mirror in the calm Schuylkill at night, the houses' rooflines drawn in light against a perfectly still surface. The eleven Victorian and Tudor boathouses on the river's east bank were built between 1858 and 1893 for the Schuylkill Navy, the country's oldest amateur rowing association. The fiber-optic outline lighting first went up in 1979, designed by Ray Grenald, and is now inseparable from the city's nighttime image. In black and white, the bulb pattern reads as drawing, the reflection as a doubled drawing. The photograph captures American collegiate rowing's home river — turned into a line illustration of itself.
