Bowler Hat Gentleman and Double-Decker - London Street Photography

Sale price$65.00

A man in a bowler hat walks a London street as a red double-decker bus passes behind him, two emblems of the city's twentieth-century image caught in one frame. The bowler was created in 1849 by the London hatmakers Thomas and William Bowler for the firm Lock & Co., and became the near-uniform of City businessmen for generations before fading from everyday wear. The red bus behind him remains in daily service, a thread of continuity the hat no longer matches. The candid framing lets the figure and the bus line up by chance rather than arrangement. A photograph of an older London still visible at street level.
