Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool - Washington DC Monochrome Photography

The Lincoln Memorial sits at the head of its long reflecting pool under cloud, the National Mall's great axis stretching east toward the Washington Monument. The pool was dug in 1923 to the design of landscape architect Henry Bacon — who had completed the Memorial the year before — and runs 2,028 feet, an inch and a half deep through most of its length. On still days the surface doubles every monument behind it. In black and white, the picture strips the scene to its symmetry. The photograph captures the most public stretch of water in America — built to be reflected in.
