Great Sphinx and Pyramid - Giza Egypt Architecture Photography

The Great Sphinx sits in the foreground beneath the Pyramid of Khafre, the two monuments stacked into one clear-sky frame at Giza. The Sphinx was carved in place from a single ridge of limestone bedrock — about 73 metres long and 20 metres high — and is usually dated to the reign of Khafre, around 2500 BCE, the same pharaoh whose pyramid rises behind it. That pyramid still keeps a cap of its original smooth casing stone near the summit, a hint of how the whole plateau once gleamed. The composition lets near and far read at once: the carved face, the built mountain. Four and a half thousand years, held in a single view.
