Capitol Dome Interior - Washington DC Architecture Photography

The cast-iron interior of the United States Capitol dome soars overhead, its concentric rings of coffers leading the eye to the fresco at the apex. The 19,500-pound dome was designed by Thomas U. Walter and completed in 1866, replacing an earlier wood-and-copper version that had outgrown the expanded building. At the center, Constantino Brumidi's Apotheosis of Washington — painted in 1865 — shows the first president seated among allegorical figures of liberty and the original thirteen states. The upward angle flattens the architectural rings into a target around the painting. The photograph captures the literal high point of American civic architecture.
