Burg Eltz Castle - German Forest Monochrome Photography

Burg Eltz rises out of its wooded valley above a tributary of the Moselle, towers and half-timbered gables stacked tight on an outcrop of rock. The castle has belonged to the Eltz family since the twelfth century — the same line has held it through some thirty-three generations, and unlike most German castles it was never destroyed in war. Its walls were built up gradually between the 1100s and the 1600s, which is why the silhouette crowds so many roof heights into one mass. Fine-art black and white sinks the surrounding forest into deep tone and lifts the stonework forward. A castle that simply outlasted its century.
