Blue Ridge Mountains Autumn Sun Flare - Overlook Landscape Photography

The Blue Ridge Mountains roll toward the horizon from a Skyline Drive overlook, the forest at peak autumn color and a sun flare cutting across the foreground branches. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, built in the 1930s as a scenic route with overlooks spaced every few miles. The range takes its name from the bluish haze that settles over it — a soft scattering of light caused by isoprene, a compound the trees release into the air. The photograph lets the sun strike the lens directly, the flare adding warmth to the layered ridges — Virginia's signature view, in its loudest season.
