The bird of paradise flower thrusts a fan of orange and blue out of a sharp green bract, the whole structure poised like a bird about to take flight. Its botanical name is Strelitzia reginae — native to South Africa and named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of Britain's George III. The resemblance is functional: in the wild, sunbirds land on the fused blue petal to feed, and their weight trips it open to dust their feet with pollen. The close framing isolates that mechanism, holding the bloom against a plain ground so the architecture of petal and bract reads clearly. The photograph captures one of the most sculptural flowers in cultivation.
